for Hiding from Need for Real Sex Education for Teens

- July 16, Albany , NY.
Which of the following have been burying their heads in the sand?
A) Ostriches when they sense danger
B) State Senate Republican leaders while pretending that New York’s teenagers do not need comprehensive sex education to help them make healthy decisions
C) Ostriches and Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno
It turns out that ostriches have been getting a bad rap all these years: they never bury their heads in the sand.
So who better than this oft maligned bird to tell Senator Bruno and his colleagues in the Republican Leadership “Get Your Head Out of the Sand” and deal realistically with sex education and the health needs of teenagers by passing the Healthy Teens Act.
The law easily passed the Assembly, but Senate Republicans blocked consideration in the Senate, ignoring high rates of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections in New York.
The Ostrich, sporting her “Real Sex Ed Saves Lives” T-shirt, appeared in an Albany Times Union ad, distributed fliers near the State Capitol, serving as spokesbird for the campaign and supporting Family Planning Advocates of New York State as it delivers both toy Ostriches and faxes to the offices of Senate Republicans.
In an exclusive interview, the Ostrich pointed out that:
- 72% of New Yorkers support the Healthy Teens Act, and 88% agree that students need information about contraception and the prevention of sexually transmitted infections.
- A federal evaluation showed that “abstinence only” programs do not delay sexual activity. Comprehensive sex education does.
- Comprehensive sex education can save both lives and money by reducing unintended pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted infections.
The Ostrich also stressed that in her experience “hiding from a problem never made it go away. I hope I can help the Republicans understand this.”
